[aka Peterkin's Rangers] Henry had transferred from Capt. Spark's Company. He has 4 cards in his archival file. This became Co N of 20th Regiment SC Infantry, Henry served in the Calvary component of the 20th. This unit was disbanded on unknown date and served with Hampton's Legion of Cavalry. Assigned to General Kershaw's, Kennedy's & Conner's Brigade. Battles: Charleston Harbor. Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Berryville, Near Port Republic, Strasburg, Cedar Creek, Carolina Campaign, Aversboro, & Bentonville. He never married and is buried at Live Oak Cem. John Calhoun Gandy was assigned to three different units. In order: Enlisted 1 August 1863 at Darlington S.C on the day the unit was organized in Capt. J.A Peterkin's Company of Cavalry attached to the 20th SC Infantry. His Lieut. was J. M. L. Alford. I find him in Company N. I have found no Co. N on this page. Thelast listing is Co. M. / The 20th SC Inf. Regt. was composed of 10 companies of Infantry , four of Cav. and one light Arty.
I find him transferred to the Light Art'y Capt. Charles Co. and later in Co. D Inglis's Light Arty.

Pvt. Madison Nation first served in Co. I, 3rd S. C. Reserves.

He was enlisted into Co. A, 20th S.C. Infantry at Pocotaligo, S.C., 12 February 1863.

He was reported 'absent sick' from 30 September 1863 until his death, 23 October, 1863. He is interred in the Confederate memorial section of Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina.

Evan Talley, the son of Nathaniel Talley, married E.C. Pickelsimer and fathered John Stanley Talley. John Stanley Talley married Julia Catherine Cantrell and fathered Willis Russel Talley. Willis Russel Talley married Ola Cecil Granger and fathered Raliegh Warren Talley. Raliegh Warren Talley married Mary Rachael Dill and fathered Barbara Ann Talley, my mother.

From Orangeburg, family listed in Census 1860. Lineage to 1549 in Switzerland, and though to this day. Last male was Otis W Shuler, Orangeburg who had 6 daughters. Otis died 1969. My mother is one of those daughters.

John was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina 11 Aug 1843. He has 18 cards in his archival file. He enlisted at about 17 years of age on 15 April 1862 at Orangeburg and mustered at Sullivan Island, Charleston, SC. He was enlisted by Col Keitt. He was assigned extra duty as a wood cutter. He remained at Charleston until its evacuation. Assigned to Kershaw's Brigade 1st Corps Army of North Virginia.
6th Aug 1864 he is in the Jackson Hospital at Richmond with a dx of Diarrhea and Fever, a severe case and was given a 30-day medical furlough.

Battles: Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Berryville, [ in Aug 1864 assigned to Conner's Brigade, Kershaw's Division] Cedar Creek, Carolina Campaign Averasboro and Bentonville.

John died 6 Mar 1911 and is buried at West End Cem. Saint Matthews, Calhoun County, SC

Morgan G. L. Weathers was a brother to my great, great grandfather - Pinckney Marion Weathers of the same company (and of the 5th South Carolina Cavalry).

My great great grandfather enlisted in Company B of the 20th South Carolina Infantry. He was also in Company A of the 5th South Carolina Cavalry - also known as Ferguson's Regiment.
He served with his (future) father-in-law, Joel R. Whetsell.

My great, great, great grandfather enlisted in Company B of the of the 20th South Carolina Infantry.
He was a brother to John M and David C Whetsell, of the 5th South Carolina Cavalry; and of Jacob I Whetsell of the 24th South Carolina Infantry.

Enlisted in Company C, 20th SC Infantry on October 6, 1863 in Lexington, SC for the war. Wounded in the right ankle exactly a year after he enlisted on October 6, 1864 in Petersburg, VA. Returned to combat on October 12, 1864. Appears on parole rolls at Bennett's Place, NC with 2nd (Consolidated) SC Infantry, Kennedy's Brigade, McLaws Division, Hardee's Corps, Army of the South/Army of Tennessee.

My great, great, great grandfather enlisted enlisted in Company C of the 20th South Carolina Infantry.

Brother of John T. Nates. Wounded in left knee by gunshot at Second Cold Harbor. Survived the war. Died in 1880, buried in Nates Cemetery in the Dutch Fork Community of Columbia, SC. The cemetery was destroyed by developers. It is located at 104 Chelveston Drive in Chartwell Subdivision off of St. Andrews Road. There is a common marker on the property with the names of those who were buried there. The lot is vacant and privately owned and the owners have made a nice flower garden around the monument.

John T. Nates of Company C was from the Dutch Fork Community near Columbia, SC. He survived the war and his grave is located in the Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Northeast Columbia, SC.

John Henry was from Deans Swamp, Orangeburg Dist. He enlisted June 26 1862 at Sullivans Island.He was listed killed in action aboard the Steamer Sumter on Aug. 31 1863 in the Charleston Harbor.

Lived in North, S.C.

Nathaniel was 29 years old when he enlisted and mustered on Sullivan Island, Charleston South Carolina on 20 June 1862. He was soon transferred to the Engineer Construction detail as an Overseer. His records reflect that he spent most of the war on Sullivan Island. In May of 1865 his unit and the remains of several other units were consolidated but surrendered soon afterwards. He is distantly related on my mothers Tolson line.

Enlisted 1862, served at Charleston and SC islands, was not on steamer mistakenly bombarded by Ft Sumpter, wounded at First Deep Bottom, VA, amputation of right arm, returned to SC, married 4 times, fathered 15 children

My great grandfather, James Addison Cowan, was Captain of Company E, 20th S.C. Infantry Volunteers. He is buried at Barkers Creek Baptist Church Cemetery near Honea Path, S.C. His obituary in the Anderson Intelligencer dated Oct. 1889: 'Captain J.A. Cowan died at his home in Martin Township last Sunday morning, at 2 o'clock, after an illness of several weeks. His remains wefre interred at Barkers Creek Church on Monday. Rev. D.W. Hiott conducting the funeral services. Capt. Cowan was well known throughout the county and his friends will regret to hear of his death. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his death.' Note: Captain James A. Cowan, Co. E, 20th SC Infantry.' I have a copy of a desertion charge he and J.J. Copeland signed against Private John McClain on March 24th 1865. Any additional information on Company E will be appreciated.

William Jasper Shaw served with his brother Leonard Pinckney Shaw under last name Tucker. Pension applications in 1919 revert to last name Shaw and were approved as having served 'as bona fide soldiers' in Captain James Addison Cowan's E company. This accords with family oral tradition as well.

Most sources state this company was raised from Laurens county, SC. In fact, most were from Martin township in Anderson county, SC. Almost all of the pension records show post-war residences in Honea Path, SC.

This unit was stationed in Sullivan's Island early in the war and were part of a revolving garrison at Battery Wagner on Morris Island. Battery Wagner eventually fell after a 58 day seige. The unit spent the fall and winter of 1863-64 regaining their strength. As federal forces were withdrawn from around Charleston, SC, this unit was transferred to Virginia and became part of Kershaw's brigade. They left Charleston, SC on May 16, 1864 via railroad and had joined General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia by May 22, 1864.

This unit participated in battles at Battery Wagner, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and 2nd Deep Bottom. They were detached to General Jubal Early for the Valley campaign from August to October of 1864. They returned to Petersburg for the ongoing seige, but were again detached to the Carolinas in January of 1865. There they fought on until General Johnston's April surrender to General Sherman in NC. Most were mustered out April 26, 1865 at Greensboro, NC

William Jasper Shaw's record states that he was discharged October 13, 1864 in Virginia after being 'shot through the hip bone.' He may have been among the wounded at Tom's Brook, Virginia on October 9, 1863. He relates having reached Charleston by train and after a time back to Anderson county on foot.

He was born 10 April 1845 in Anderson county, enlisted 13th August 1861, and died 14 Dec 1924. He is buried at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in the Brushy Creek community of Anderson county.

Philip I. 'P.I.' Rawl was born and raised near Lexington, S.C. He served with Co. K in Charleston, fighting at Battery Wagener. He and his company were transferred to Virginia in the spring of 1864, where he fought at The Crater, among other battles. Rawl was captured at the Battle of Cedar Creek in the fall of 1864, and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Md. His entire POW experience is captured as an autobiographical chapter in the book 'Recollections And Reminiscences 1861-1865, Vol. 1' [United Daughters of the Confederacy, 1990]. After being released in 1865, he returned to Lexington County, where he became a doctor and farmer. Rawl died in 1928 at the Confederate Veterans home in Columbia, S.C., and is buried in the graveyard at St. John's Lutheran Church, seven miles west of Lexington, just off U.S. 378.

William was about 38 Years old when he enlisted as Pvt in Capt J.A. Petekin's Regt. S C Vol. Cavalry at Darlington District, SC on 1 Jan 1864. Enlisted by Capt. Sparks for the war. He has 2 cards in his archival file which gives his Co. as N. However Capt. Sparks was recruiting in Darligton and was with Co L. This Cavalry unit was attached to the 20th SC Infantry. Many of these men also served in Hampton's Legion. He is related to me by marriage.

John was 24 in 1860. He enlisted in Capt J A Peterkin's Co of Cavalry on 1 Aug 1863 in Marlboro Co. SC. This unit was attached to the 20th SC Infantry. He was severely wounded 15 Feb 1864 and given a Surgeons Discharge Certificate. His archival card gives his Co as N.. However his recruiting Officer Capt Sparks recruited for Co L. We are distantly related by marriage.

Henry was born 17 Nov 1843 in Marlboro District, South Carolina. He followed his brother into Confederate Service. Enlisting 17 Oct 1861 in Capt. R.C. Emannel's Co. Hatche's Regiment Coast Rangers. This became Co G 23rd SC Infantry which evolved into Co. L 20th SC Infantry [Rileys Rangers] which evolved thru consolidation to Capt A.D Sparks 19th Battalion SC Cavalry and then into [New 2nd] SC Infantry which finished the war in the Army of Tennessee which surrendered at Goldsboro NC.
He married my cousin Amanda A Townsend. He died at Kirby, Dillon Co. SC and he and wife are buried at Bethesda Southern Methodist Ch. Oak Grove, Dillon, South Carolina

James military career is the most difficult series of events I have ever encountered. Because of the numerous consolidations of the diminished # of troops. He is born 13 Aug 1834 in Marlboro Co. SC. He is found in Co L 20th SC Vols. where he has 5 archival cards. Unit was changed 30 April 1863 to Co E Capt A.D. Sparks Battalion Sc Cavalry where he has 10 archival cards. He enlisted first from Marlboro Co. SC In the latter part of the war his unit becomes one of many who were consolidated into the {New] 2nd SC Infantry part of Blanchard's SC Reserves. First assigned to the Dept of Sc, Ga, & Fla. It was assigned to the SC Coast around Charleston. In the Spring of 1864 it moved to Virginia. Assigned to General's Kershaw, Kennedy, & Conner's Brigades. Fought at Cold Harbor, Shenandoah Valley with General Early. Carolina Campaign, Morris Island and Bentonville, SC In 1859 he married my cousin Elizabeth A Bolton of Bennettsville, Marlboro Co. SC. They are buried at Beauty Spot Cem. Tatum, Marlboro Co. SC

James was born 24 Nov 1825 in Marlboro District, SC In 1860 he is 35 years old, and the Post Office is at Bennettsville. He enlists 1 Aug 1863 in Marlboro Co. in Capt. J.A. Peterkin's Company of Cavalry for 3 years. This becomes Co N of the 20th part of Hampton's Legion. James has his issues with illness. Eventually the 20th, 1st, 5th & 7th SC becomes part of Blanchard's SC Reserves. James has 4 cards in his Co. N. 20th archival file.

The few cards in His file reveal the following. He was from Marlboro Co. SC. He was enlisted in that county by Capt. A D Sparks for the war. Enlisting on 10 May 1863 into Capt. Ellison S Keitts Co. 20th Regiment SC Vol's. This unit became Co M. 20th SC Infantry - Mounted Rifles - On 10 June he was transferred to Co N Cavalry Co of the Regiment.
